WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

  • This uplifting session explores the function of song and movement in your early childhood classroom.

  • It is a practical reminder of how music can be used as a powerful educational tool.

  • It consolidates how music functions to help our students reach educational goals, various outcomes and global competencies.

  • This session will also explore the use of home-made instruments created from recyclable materials.

BIOGRAPHY

Stephen is currently a Teacher in Anglophone School District South working with the District as a Technology Coach. Throughout his career and during time spent living in the three Atlantic Provinces, Stephen has taught lessons privately, focusing on the Guitar, for all ages. During his early career in PEI, Stephen participated in designing and teaching a weekly preschool music class for children and parents, exploring Music and movement while also incorporating music theory basics.

Stephen went on to study music at Dalhousie University, focusing on performance. After completing his undergraduate degree, he shifted his focus to music education, completing a teaching degree at the University of New Brunswick.

During his time in the classroom, Stephen’s teaching centered on High School music and focused on Rock and Roll music history and theory, as well as more advanced music history and theory classes in the upper grade levels. While working in the High School environment, Stephen shifted to a strong focus on the integration of technology in music. This involved developing units on songwriting, recording and video production in the classroom. This also included the use of technology in aiding and improving the production of a variety of School based performances, including musical theater, concerts & variety shows.  During the last 3 years, Stephen moved into a role with the School District focused on integrating technology into the classroom across all subject areas and grade levels.

Stephen has kept strong ties to the music community, doing sound and technical setup (including livestreaming technology post Covid-19), playing & singing in community concerts and bands, and producing his own music out of his home. His passion for the integration of technology in music has truly been amplified during this unpresented time.
